Musings from MacMahon

By Father Jim

Once again, I’ve been invited to serve the people of St. Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church on MacMahon Island, Maine. This year I will be there during the month of July. It actually works better for me since much of our programing at St. Catherine’s either starts or is planned during the month of August, much a result of our public school schedule.

This year I will be on MacMahon from July 1 to July 31. And I am excited that, for the first time, Joan will get to share the entire time with me. We will welcome family from Chicago and Winston-Salem and friends from Knoxville and Marietta off and on through the month. I will preach and celebrate the Eucharist each Sunday at the Chapel and sometime during the month will lead a celebration of life remembering all those who have died this past year. We will spend some time off the island exploring a bit more of Maine including Acadia National Park. And I will read (more on this endeavor later).

As I have done in the past, I intend to use our blog, “The Welcoming Journey,” to reflect on my time on the island and to share with each of you the goings on both in the Rectory and on the island. I am deeply grateful to each of you and to your Vestry and Staff for making this time possible for me and I hope my time away is not only a time of renewal for me and my family, but for the congregation as well. I know that others will work very hard during this time to support one another and those in need. I am not blind to this sacrifice and in addition to my prayers of thanksgiving I can only pray that all of us together will be strengthened and enriched by the experience.

As to my reading, I thought you might want to see some of the titles I intend to tackle during July. These are offered in no particular order.

  • The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel by Rachel Joyce.
  • Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers by Anne Lamott
  • The Book of Job: When Bad Things Happened to a Good Person by Harold S. Kushner
  • Chasing Francis: A Pilgrim's Tale by Ian Morgan Cron
  • The Search for Truth About Islam: A Christian Pastor Separates Fact from Fiction by Ben Daniel
  • Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
  • Camino de Santiago: The Way of St. James by John Brierley
  • The Monastery of the Heart: An Invitation to a Meaningful Life by Joan Chittister

Thanks to each of you for your ministry and support.

Fr. Jim+

Flowers & candles need sponsorship

There are still many Sundays open to sign up to sponsor our beautiful altar flowers and/or sanctuary candles, in thanksgiving for or in memory of a special person or occasion -- birthdays, anniversaries and more! Check the Opportunities for Ministry form in your bulletin which lists the next open dates coming up, or see the complete year chart in the office. Sponsorship is NOT limited to one or two persons or families per date so please choose the date you prefer. And when you've signed up, please remember to submit a check ($60/vase for flowers, $20 candles) on or before your scheduled date. Remember, these special donations are the ONLY funding for this ministry! We greatly appreciate your generosity.

Delegates must be confirmed communicants of St. Catherine's in good standing, meaning that they "pray, work, and give for the spread of God’s Kingdom" on a regular basis. The Council will be held November 8-9 at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Atlanta. Delegates are required to attend all meetings in the given year including pre-council convocation meetings. Applications are due by August 18. If you are interested in serving in this important role please check the Opportunities For Ministry form in your bulletin or contact Fr. Jim.

Stewardship Reflections coming this fall

St. Catherine's will publish a new reflections booklet, “Flourish In Spirit,” as part of this year’s stewardship program. The booklet will contain 35 reflections leading up to New Consecration Sunday in October. We will be asking for volunteer writers again beginning in August, to write a meditation on a verse of scripture which will now be due by September 6. Please begin considering if you will be interested in writing for this collection and watch for the start of sign up later this summer. For questions please contact Karen Manno or Rachel Bagby.

Letters

To all of our church family at St. Catherine's,

We received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from St Catherine's last Sunday as a condolence for the death of my grandmother and Sofia and Nathalie's great-grandmother, Olimpia Arias Navarro. It was yet another reminder of the support we have always received from everyone at St Cat's and what makes this congregation, and our membership in it, such an important part of our lives. Thanks to everyone for the beautiful gift and for keeping my grandmother in your prayers.

God Bless you all,
Beatriz, Sofia and Nathalie Montalvo

Letters have been received from the following to acknowledge gifts from our parish:

  • From Anne K. Lynn, President, American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, for $555.00 [Holy Week collections];
  • From Camille Cordak, Director of Development, Habitat for Humanity NW Metro Atlanta, for $3,500.00 received on May 9 for Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition.

Health Tips - from our Congregational Nurses

  • Shrug off shoulder tension
Some people react to stress with increased muscle tension in their neck and shoulders. Progressive muscle relaxation, which involves tensing and relaxing of key muscle groups, can help. Shoulder shrugs are an example of this technique and an easy exercise that can be done almost anywhere, anytime to help relax these muscles. Sit up tall with shoulders back and arms at your side. Lift up your shoulders into an "I don't know" position, hold for two seconds, and then release them. Let your shoulders fall down as far from your ears as possible. Source: American College of Sports Medicine
  • Nuts about pistachios
Good news for health nuts: eating about 1 to 2 ounces of pistachios a day can benefit heart health by lowering bad (LDL) cholesterol and reducing inflammation. Enjoy a handful of pistachios for a snack or use as a heart-smart ingredient in many dishes, such as vegetable, fruit or chicken salads, trail mix, muffins, hot cereals, pilafs and pesto. You can also grind up pistachios and use them as a crispy coating for fish fillets or skinless poultry breast. However, nuts are high in calories, so don't go nuts!
