“Summertime and the Living is Easy”
I recently traveled to Kansas City to spend time with a close friend of mine. Peggy and I have been friends for 23 years. We’ve raised our children together. In fact, our children consider themselves siblings. I was able to spend five days at Pete and Peggy’s apartment. They are in the transitional stage of their relocation and are not into their home in Kansas City yet. Pete had to come back to Atlanta to take care of some final details with their house as they prepare to close and get moved. So, Peggy and I shared a small room with double beds. We talked and laughed and shared just as two little girls would at a “spend the night party.” We opened the window as we slept to take in the soft prairie breeze. I was reminded of many summers I had spent with grandparents and cousins in Topeka. As our conversation dwindled one night, just before I fell asleep, I thought how blessed I am to have a person in my life with whom I can be so totally “myself.” My visit to Kansas City was a refreshing combination of childhood memories and easy living. It was like going home.
I recall my freshman year of college I began smoking cigarettes. I had told my mother, but not my dad. He had tried often to quit smoking and always cautioned us not to start the habit because quitting was just too difficult. Mom told Dad at some point and Daddy took me aside one day and said, “I understand you’re smoking now.” “Yes, I am,” I admitted. He told me that although he was disappointed, I should feel free to light up at home if I wanted. He said if I couldn’t be myself at home, then I couldn’t be myself anywhere.
“Home” is where we can take our shoes off. It’s where we can relax and unbutton our pants and take a nap on the couch. Home is where we can say what we want or say nothing at all. Home is “where the heart is.” Home is easy and comfortable – like summer.
Scripture says that God wants to make His home in me. I wonder what that would look like?
Parish Picnic – Sunday, June 3
NOTE: 7:30 & 10:30 AM services ONLY this day
Everyone’s invited! The men of St. Catherine’s (and anyone who would like to assist) are putting on a picnic immediately following our 10:30 am worship to celebrate the start of summer. And we’re going to raise money to present to our high school graduates to help with book costs for those going off to college. The picnic will be held rain or shine.
Please join us for grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings and dessert in the back of the church outside the Parish Hall after the service. Any and all donations at this event will help.
We’re looking for plenty of volunteers to help put on the picnic! We need people to set up & prepare food the day/evening before, and to set up, grill, serve, tear down, clean up, and monitor the activities the day of the picnic. If you can volunteer in any way, please call Ben Frost, 770-565-8262, or contact the church office.

Sunday, June 10, at 8:45 & 10:30 Services
As Anglicans, one of the things that we believe is that our common prayer together shapes our believing, and in a characteristically Anglican way of thinking about it, what we believe shapes how we pray. While most every pew in our Episcopal Church contains a few copies of the Book of Common Prayer, we don’t always know why we do the things we do. Sure, we understand the basic origins of the Eucharist, but do we know the theology that shapes it?
On Sunday, June 10, at both principal services (8:45 and 10:30 AM) we will replace the sermon with an Instructed Eucharist in order to guide people through the theology that shapes our liturgy.
We hope you will come and learn. There will be a discussion guide with questions for leading a conversation about Liturgy and Worship in St. Catherine’s. You will be able to take it home with you so that you might reflect in a family setting on why the way we worship is important to you.
Sunday, June 10, at the Cathedral
The Diocesan Confirmation for adults & youth will be held on June 10 at 4 PM at the Cathedral of St. Philip. Everyone is invited to join us to support our parish members being confirmed and/or received at this service.
First outing – June 10 at City Club Marietta Golf Course
Check out the course at City Club Marietta Golf Resort and Conference Center, 510 Powder Springs St., Marietta, GA 30064
Are you the kind of golfer who prays for pars when you get out on the golf course? If you are like most of us "hackers" then we invite you to come join your fellow parishioners to play golf on Sunday. Are we encouraging you to play "hooky" and skip church? NOOOOOOO...... We want to encourage some fellowship by going to the 7:30am service together, then eat breakfast, before heading out to a 10:00am tee time. This will be an informal approach, with no big prizes or meals to help us keep the costs down. Each person will be responsible for paying for their own greens fees on the day of the outing. We just need for you to confirm your participation by the Sunday one week before each golf outing. We will make reservations for enough foursomes to cover who has registered.
We are planning to have these "Praying for Pars" golf outings on the second Sunday of each month, starting in June and going through September. Please mark your calendar for the following dates:
To get started, please send an e-mail to Walt McGill at wsmcgillaol.com or call him at 770-971-8890. We will use e-mail to communicate the logistics for each golf outing. If you cannot make it for some of these outings, it's no problem to just come on the dates that you can.
We look forward to some great fellowship together playing golf, regardless of whether you are "praying for pars" or "eyeing some eagles" or "trying for triples"...... See you there!!!
The church office will be closed Tuesday, June 12, for the staff planning day.
Sunday, June 17, 10 AM in the Parish Hall
All St. Catherine's newcomers and parish members are invited for coffee and "goodies" at 10 AM in the Parish Hall, and join with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to get acquainted in an informal setting. We hope to see you there!
A group of 7 hardy souls went to Cloudland Canyon on May 11 to see the beauty of the canyon and to get some exercise on a beautiful warm day in May. We succeeded in both missions, and then some. On the hike were Cary Kilgore, Sallie Bowes, Alex Dillson, Kyle Lynn, Tyler Nunez, Nelson Gale, and Hale Sanders. We were all amazed at the beauty of this canyon and thankful that it's so close to Marietta. Pleasing to the eye were the blooming mountain laurels and the fullness of the falls this late in a dry year. Special kudos to Nelson for hiking after undergoing rotator cuff surgery. We all look forward to the Stephen Nicholson Memorial Hike next year.

Dear St. Catherine’s,
Our sincere thanks to all those who have given us support through your prayers, blessings, notes, phone calls, flowers, emails and hugs on the tragic death of Sophie. She was such a part of our lives and of St. Catherine’s as well, at least she thought so, this was her space. Just knowing that others care helps heal the pain. Thanks for all your love.
